Adrian Valentine is a genderfluid, sanguine musical theatre performer who enjoys blending together the mundane and the sublime. Based in Yorkshire, he is a jack of all trades, combining their love for horror and fashion with their talent for performance, bringing spine-chilling acts to stages all over Yorkshire.

When I was in college, a teacher told me that I was not a good actor, and I would never amount to anything. I left college with a severe knock to my confidence and a lot of doubt in my abilities.

I didn’t give up, though – not fully. Musical theatre has and always will be a passion of mine. I went to university, initially pursuing Music Production, but switched to Musical Theatre in my first week and was welcomed with open arms. Despite only having received opera training, I was told that I could achieve anything I wanted. 

Support from my parents, friends, and other members of staff kept me going, and now I have performed in many amazing projects, including Rocky Horror Show, put on by York St John University in 2025, and The Strange Exchange, an entirely original musical written by the members of Shadows of Pride, a YTR Takeover Student Company that I am honoured to be a part of.

I am driven by my love for creativity. I strive to bring joy to an otherwise bleak world through my performances and creations, and this is something I would like to do for years to come. Not only am I a singer, but I also compose, direct, write, and have been a sound operator. I love learning new skills and throwing myself into anything related to the stage – it doesn’t matter if I’m on it, backstage, or writing the material to be shown.

As a transgender performer, I bring a unique experience to the stage. I am able to play characters of all genders, and have often been called a shapeshifter for how I’m able to play both masculine and feminine roles with ease. I strive to bring more LGBTQ+ representation to the theatre industry. Theatre owes its roots to gender-bending, from back in Shakespearean times, and trans people are everywhere in life. We should also be on stage more; both as characters and in the ensemble.

Performing has been in my family for a long time, too. My parents are incredibly supportive of my journey, being in many bands together throughout their teenage and adult years and performing with an amateur operatic society. My grandma had a love for classical music and was delighted to see me progress into the arts, and my granddad always supported my love for learning instruments.
